Handwriting K5 uses Macmillan/McGraw-Hill Letterbooks, and startwrite papers to teach print Handwriting. We strive to teach all students the proper letter formation that will not only ensure neatness, but will bridge the gap between print and cursive.
Phonics/Reading Macmillan/McGraw-Hill as well as Saxon Phonics is used in our K5 curriculum. Students are taught the phonetic values of letters/sounds, blending to read, letter combinations and syllables. Both programs build incrementally and review daily. New learning gradually builds upon old learning and regular practice reinforces both. Learning modalities such as kinesthetic, visual, auditory and spatial are used on a daily basis as well, helping meet the needs of all learners.
Math Saxon Math is the primary curriculum used in K5. New lessons build upon previously taught lessons that involve hands on skills. These allow students to be actively involved in the learning process. Students also practice everyday skills in calendar math that include days, months, patterns, counting (skip, 1’s, 5’s, 10’s), weather, time, shapes, and money.
Social Studies A Beka lays the foundation for Christian ethics to be taught through Community involvement, cultures around the world, as well as past historical events. Teachers involve parents as community helpers to build upon the curriculum’s objectives. A wide range of books that incorporate the ideas of the units are also used.
Science A Beka is also used for Science. It outlines God’s plans for us as individuals by giving us our senses to appreciate the world he made for us, as well as his plan for Weather, Seasons, Seeds, Animals and the Seashore.
K5 students also receive library/story time in their classrooms each week, as well as P.E. and Music class. Students are also taught daily devotions within their classroom in addition to chapel services each week. |
