Curriculum
Sixth Grade
Math:  Saxon Math Course 1 (Saxon)
All new concepts are developed through hands-on activities and rich mathematical conversations that actively engage students in the learning process.. Content is mastered through small increments followed by integrated practice and through assessments every five lessons.  Math investigations are exploratory opportunities every ten lessons.

Handwriting:
(Zaner-Bloser)
This curriculum uses an easy, step-by-step approach to teach handwriting. Continuous stroke, vertical manuscript reinforces reading development. Cursive alphabet promotes automaticity in handwriting to support students in all of their writing, reading, and assessment efforts.

Spelling:  Spelling, Vocabulary, Poetry 6 (A Beka)This course guides students toward better spelling, richer vocabulary, and enjoyment of good poetry.  The book contains weekly spelling lists, activities related to lists, selected poetry, and a glossary of vocabulary words.

Language:
God’s Gift of Language C (A Beka)This workbook provides instruction as well as practice in grammar, composition, and word usage.  Its purpose is to make clear to students the orderly structure of their language.

Science:
Observing God’s World (A Beka)This text fascinates students by presenting things that they can see, observe, and understand in the world around them.  Students learn about a vast variety of invertebrates as they create an invertebrate zoo.  They study the plant kingdom, learning to recognize many common trees and a number of plant families.  Students will also explore the wonders of the earth, space, chemistry, and matter.  Demonstrations, experiments, projects, and research activities give the students a hands-on understanding of scientific principles.

Reading
- Mountain Pathways, Voyage of Discovery, and Of America 2 (A Beka)This reading program contains delightful stories and poems that develop vocabulary skills and strengthen reading ability with much emphasis on oral reading skills in addition to comprehension. Selections place an emphasis on character and patriotism.
In addition to the three basic readers, the students will also complete Read and Think 6 which contains 42 timed reading exercises and skill sheets designed to teach students how to read quickly with comprehension. Questions require students to recall facts, notice implications, and apply reasoning skills. Adventures in Greatness is another text used weekly which contains interesting stories that are designed to strengthen speed and comprehension skills through the reading of an article and the completion of a short quiz without reference to the article. In addition to class reading assignments, the students participate in Pinewood Reader Program in which they have the opportunity to take standardized computer quizzes over books they read. The program is individualized in that book levels and point goals are based on each student's current ability level and becomes increasingly challenging as the student progresses.

Social Studies - New World History and Geography in Christian Perspective (A Beka)This text includes the history and geography of the Americas. The New World includes the continents of the Americas and the islands of the Caribbean. The course looks at American History and the founding of the United States. It also looks at the history of the countries of Latin America.
